Rene Molina

From the Philippines, Rene Molina had worked in both radio and television and taught at university. He arrived in New Zealand in 2008.

Before settling in Hamilton he was aware of the ethnic and cultural shows aired on Community Radio Hamilton, now Free FM.

He was given the opportunity to do so and his show 'Barangay NZ' is now on it's 5th year.

"I play music from the Philippines and do a bit of trivia and information. I think the Filipino community who listens in are happy to hear a NZ-made Filipino radio show on air."

Outside of radio Molina works as a specialist support staff for youth with intellectual disabilities while also studying.

Molina was nominated for the Community Hero award by Free 89FM.

Station Manager Phil Grey said "Rene's show is upbeat, sounds great, and his passion for broadcasting and love of Free FM shine through. Rene has always been hugely supportive of the station, and reliable despite pressures on his time."
