Volunteer Basketball Coach – Special Olympics Waikato

We’re looking for volunteer basketball coaches to join Special Olympics Waikato and support a great group of athletes both on and off the court.

This role is about encouraging participation, building confidence, and creating a fun, supportive team environment where athletes can learn and enjoy the game at their own pace.

Your duties as a coach:

  • Support weekly trainings and games
  • Encourage teamwork, participation, and confidence
  • Help athletes develop basketball skills
  • Be part of a positive and inclusive team culture

You don’t need to be an experienced coach to get involved. If you enjoy basketball, are encouraging, reliable, and enjoy working with people, we’d love to hear from you.

Volunteers play a huge part in creating opportunities for athletes to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy being part of a team.

Requirements:

  • A positive, encouraging attitude
  • Interest in basketball and community sport
  • Patience, reliability, and good communication skills
  • Ability to work as part of a supportive coaching team
  • Respectful, inclusive approach to working with athletes
  • Willingness to learn and take guidance
  • Coaching or playing experience is helpful, but not essential
  • Willingness to complete volunteer onboarding and training, including a Police Check

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • 2 hour weekly training sessions held on Wednesday evenings
  • 6pm–8pm at Melville High School Gym (Collins Road)
  • Support at games and occasional competitions may be available
  • Opportunities for events across the North Island in the future
