New Student Interviewer – Interview Volunteer (Home Based)

Home Based

New students often feel anxious about asking for literacy support. For many, it has taken a lot of courage to make that first call. As a Student Interviewer, you will provide a friendly, patient and welcoming first point of contact.

You will speak with new students by phone, get to know them, gather information about their learning needs and complete a reading assessment. The information you collect helps the team personalise their learning and match them with a suitable volunteer literacy coach.

The process:

  • New student details are posted on the team noticeboard.
  • If you are available, you can volunteer to interview the student.
  • The first call is a friendly conversation to build rapport and complete the student interview form.
  • Once the student receives their reading material, you make a second call to complete a reading assessment.
  • You update the team on progress through the noticeboard.
  • You will work as part of a small team of 3–4 interviewers, keeping the role flexible and sharing the workload.
  • Phone calls can be made using an app provided by the organisation, so there is no cost to you.
  • Team communication is through Slack.

Students may be teenagers or adults. You can let the team know if you have a preference.

This is a rewarding role for someone who enjoys meeting people, listening to their stories and helping others feel comfortable taking an important first step in their learning journey.

Requirements:

  • Experience teaching reading and writing is preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Confident telephone manner and clear English pronunciation.
  • Reliable and committed.
  • Able to respond promptly when a student interview is available.

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • Flexible hours, with each student interview taking around 1 hour.
