Committee Member – Grounds, Gardening & Building Maintenance

Hamilton

We’re looking for a Committee Member to take responsibility for our Gardening/Grounds and Building Maintenance portfolios.

This is an active, hands-on committee role rather than a governance-only position. You’ll help identify maintenance and improvement needs, coordinate projects and work alongside other committee members to ensure Abbeyfield House remains a safe, attractive and welcoming environment for its residents.

Governance experience would be an advantage, but we’re particularly interested in someone who is practical, organised and willing to get involved. Experience in property maintenance, gardening, facilities management or project management would be valuable.

Just as importantly, we’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with older people. A friendly face, a willingness to have a chat and an interest in the residents and their wellbeing are an important part of the role.

About the Role

  • Oversee the gardening, grounds and building maintenance portfolios.
  • Identify maintenance and improvement needs and help prioritise projects.
  • Coordinate contractors, tradespeople and maintenance projects as required.
  • Work with the committee to plan and manage property improvements and keep informed on issues and progress.
  • Spend time getting to know residents and hearing their concerns or ideas.

Requirements:

  • Has an affinity for and enjoys interacting with older people.
  • Is practical, reliable and willing to be hands-on.
  • Has good organisational and project management skills.
  • Can take initiative and follow projects through to completion.
  • Has experience or an interest in property, gardening, grounds or building maintenance.
  • Governance or committee experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Can work collaboratively as part of a small, active committee.

Time commitment:

  • Committee meetings are held the second Monday of each month at 5:30pm at Abbeyfield House, Hillcrest.
  • Allow approximately 2–3 hours per month outside meetings, depending on current maintenance and project requirements.
  • This is an ongoing volunteer commitment.

Getting started:

The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
