Face-to-Face Literacy Coach – Otorohanga

The Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust is looking for a caring and reliable female volunteer to support an older woman in Otorohanga with her reading and writing.

This is a one-on-one, face-to-face role, meeting regularly in a safe public space like the local library. You’ll work alongside her at her own pace, helping build confidence and practical literacy skills in a relaxed, supportive way.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide one-on-one literacy support
  • Meet regularly at a mutually agreed time (e.g. local library)
  • Take a learner-led, supportive approach
  • Encourage confidence and independence

Requirements:

  • Female volunteer (to help the learner feel comfortable)
  • Patient, kind, and encouraging
  • Reliable and able to commit to regular sessions
  • Good communication skills
  • No teaching experience needed — training and support are provided

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • 2–3 hours per week
  • Includes 1–2 face-to-face sessions
  • Includes 1 catch-up phone call with the learner
  • Some lesson preparation required
