The Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust is looking for a caring and reliable female volunteer to support an older woman with her reading and writing. You would be able to meet her in either Otorohanga, Te Awamutu or Hamilton.

This is a one-on-one, face-to-face role, meeting regularly in a safe public space like the local library. You’ll work alongside her at her own pace, helping build confidence and practical literacy skills in a relaxed, supportive way.

What you’ll do:

  • Provide one-on-one literacy support
  • Meet regularly at a mutually agreed time (e.g. local library)
  • Take a learner-led, supportive approach
  • Encourage confidence and independence

Requirements:

  • Female volunteer (to help the learner feel comfortable)
  • Patient, kind, and encouraging
  • Reliable and able to commit to regular sessions
  • Good communication skills
  • No teaching experience needed — training and support are provided

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • 2–3 hours per week
  • Includes 1–2 face-to-face sessions
  • Includes 1 catch-up phone call with the learner
  • Some lesson preparation required
