What we’re doing:
Our goal is to restore Hamilton’s native vegetation cover from less than 2% to 10% by 2050. That’s hundreds of thousands of plants across more than 1000 hectares to be restored.
This 10-year programme is the first stage of delivery on the 30-year strategy. By 2031, we aim to increase native vegetation cover by 3%, and see an increase in native birds and other wildlife in our city.
Volunteers will take part in hands-on restoration activities, including:
- Weeding invasive plant species
- Planting native trees and plants
- Helping care for and improve local gully ecosystems
What’s in It for You?
- Contribute to the restoration of Hamilton’s natural spaces
- Learn about native plants and local ecosystems
- Meet like-minded people in your community
- Enjoy meaningful outdoor activity
If you’re keen to make a positive environmental impact in Hamilton, we’d love to have you involved. Please note that Corporates and large groups are welcome too! There is a specific enquiry form you can fill out once signed up.
Predator Control Opportunities
In addition to planting and weeding, there are opportunities to get involved in predator control. Hamilton City Council has a Predator Control Advisor who can support volunteers interested in this work. Activities include helping with bait lines and trap lines, targeting common pest species such as rats and possums, to protect native plants and wildlife.
