Someone in Cambridge is having a really hard day right now. Maybe they’ve received a letter from WINZ they don’t understand, a landlord who isn’t playing by the rules, or a bill that just doesn’t add up. At Citizens Advice Bureau, our volunteers are the people who help them find a way forward.

We’re looking for warm, patient, non-judgemental people to join our welcoming front desk team in Cambridge town centre. No legal knowledge needed, we provide full training covering everything from tenancy rights and government benefits to consumer protection and family matters.

You’ll work alongside another volunteer, so you’re never on your own. And once you’ve completed your initial training, you’ll have a three-month supported period to build your confidence with the full backing of the team around you.

The shifts are short. The impact lasts a lot longer.
There are also opportunities to join one of our working groups — information, training, publicity, and more.

Requirements:

  • You're someone who enjoys connecting with people and wants to make a genuine contribution to your community.
  • A warm, respectful, and non-judgemental approach to everyone you meet
  • Good listening skills and the ability to respond with empathy
  • Clear communication in person, on the phone, and in writing
  • Confidence using a computer for research and recording information
  • A commitment to confidentiality
  • Openness to feedback and a willingness to keep learning
  • An alignment with CAB's values, including our commitment to supporting Māori (Mauri Manaia)

We'd especially love to hear from men and people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, our community is diverse, and our volunteer team should reflect that.

A Ministry of Justice background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • One rostered duty of two and a half hours per week, on a day that suits you
  • Monday to Friday
  • Because of the training investment, we ask for a minimum commitment of one year.

As well as your weekly duty, we ask volunteers to be an active part of the CAB whānau:

  • Attend regular learning and development sessions to keep your knowledge current
  • Come along to our monthly Ongoing Learning Sessions and Annual General Meeting
  • Help out at events like Awareness Week, fundraising activities, and other bureau initiatives

There are also opportunities to join one of our working groups — information, training, publicity, and more.
