About us
The Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust supports adults and teenagers in rural and isolated parts of New Zealand who missed out on reading and writing skills at school. We offer free one-to-one literacy support. Our volunteer coaches work with learners by phone or online using Zoom or Google Meet, helping them improve reading, writing, and spelling at their own pace.
About the role
As a volunteer Literacy Ambassador, you will be a familiar local face who helps people in your town find out about the free literacy support available. This role is about having conversations, sharing information, and helping people know where to turn when they are ready for support.
You don’t need to be an expert. Being approachable, willing to listen, and comfortable sharing information is what matters most.
What you will do
- You will help spread the word about free reading and writing support in Te Kuiti. This might be through conversations, sharing flyers, or connecting with local places people already trust, such as libraries, schools, community groups, and businesses. By doing this, you help people feel more confident reaching out for support when they need it.
Why volunteer with us
You will have training and guidance, ongoing support from a Community Coordinator, and the chance to connect with other Regional Ambassadors across the Waikato. This role is flexible, fits around everyday life, and lets you see the results of your efforts in Te Kuiti as people access the support they need.
What we offer you
- Flexible volunteering that works around your schedule
Initial training and a simple local action plan - Ongoing support from a Community Coordinator
- Connection with other Community Ambassadors to share ideas and experiences
- The chance to see people in Te Kuiti build confidence and skills over time
We will ask you to check in once a month with a short update so we can stay connected and support you in your role.
