Volunteer Archivist – Putaruru

Putaruru

Become the Guardian of Our History
As our Archivist, you will play a vital role in preserving the story of our community for generations to come. By auditing, organising, and digitising our historical records, you will ensure that our museum’s legacy is accessible, accurate, and meaningful — allowing visitors, researchers, and local families to connect with the people, events, and stories that shaped our region.

Your key contributions will include:

  • Organisation & Preservation: Categorise, label, digitise, and file documents, photographs, and artefacts using archival best practice, keeping our collection safe and discoverable.
  • Special Projects: Research historical questions to support exhibitions, events, or public enquiries, helping bring our community’s story vividly to life.

This is a perfect role for someone who loves history, enjoys working methodically, and wants to make a tangible impact by helping people explore and understand our shared heritage.

Requirements:

  • A genuine interest in history and heritage, with a desire to help others connect with our community’s story
  • Methodical and patient, with an enjoyment of building systems that actually work — great archiving is a marathon, not a sprint
  • Comfortable using digital tools for database entry, digitising, and filing records (experience with PastPerfect, Excel, or similar is a plus)
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle delicate documents, photographs, and artefacts with care
  • Able to work independently while collaborating with the team as needed
  • Reliable and committed to seeing projects through to completion

Time commitment:

We are looking for someone who can offer a consistent presence to help maintain momentum in our archiving projects. Ideally, you can join us:

  • Once a week, or
  • Once a fortnight (every two weeks)

We understand that life is busy, so there is some flexibility, the most important thing is continuity, so our collection stays organised and accessible for everyone.

Getting started:

The first step is to express your interest by filling out the form below. We will then put you in touch directly with the organisation for more information on the role and how to proceed.
