The Victoria Battery site is a key piece of New Zealand’s gold-mining history, where visitors can explore the machinery, tramways, and stories of miners from over 100 years ago.

As a volunteer tour guide, you’ll provide a warm welcome and help bring this history to life. Your role will involve:

  • Greeting visitors on arrival and making them feel welcome
  • Sharing the history of the Victoria Battery site in an engaging and interesting way
  • Answering questions and telling stories about gold-mining heritage
  • Helping create a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience for all visitors
  • Working as part of a friendly volunteer team

Requirements:

  • Interest in and ability to learn about the Victoria Battery site and the history of gold production
  • Able to relate history to visitors of all ages in an engaging and memorable way
  • Good standard of conversational English
  • Reliable and responsible, with a friendly attitude toward team members and visitors
  • Enjoy working as part of a team
  • Comfortable speaking to groups and answering questions
  • Patient, approachable, and enthusiastic about sharing history
  • Willingness to commit to regular shifts so visitors have a consistent experience

A Police background check is required for this role.

Time commitment:

  • Training can be arranged at a time that suits you
  • Regular shifts are usually on Saturdays or Sundays, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
  • Opportunities also available during school holidays and for special or arranged tours
  • If we have enough volunteers, shifts can be split to make it easier for everyone
  • Regular attendance helps provide a consistent and enjoyable experience for visitors
